Explore the Pincushion Island Trail: A Coastal Walk

Looking for an easy-going, scenic walk? The Pincushion Island Trail, a 2.8-kilometer loop near Twin Waters and Mudjimba, is perfect for a leisurely outing. This trail offers a delightful mix of beach, river, and mangrove scenery—just make sure to check the tide times before you go!

Bring your dog and enjoy a swim in the calm waters of the river or in the surf.

Parking: There’s a convenient car park at the end of North Shore Road, Mudjimba. Plus, there are toilets available at the car park for your convenience.

The Trail

Despite its name, Pincushion Island isn’t actually an island. At high tide, the water surrounds this sandstone outcrop, creating a picturesque island-like effect.

To begin your adventure, start with a walk along the beach heading south towards the rocky outcrop. You can pick up the trail from beach access 134.

The best time to tackle this trail is during low tide, as the river mouth can be tricky to navigate when the tide is high, and you might end up with wet feet if you’re not careful.

Whether you’re out for a peaceful stroll, a jog, or a swim, the Pincushion Island Trail offers a charming coastal experience. Enjoy the mix of beach, river, and mangroves on this lovely loop!

The Trail

Maroochy River

Head around along the edge of the river. If the tide is low there is sand the whole way but if tide is in, you can wade through the water to get around.

Follow the river around before heading back to carpark at beach access 136. Or continue along rivers edge to a jetty which takes you into Twin waters resort where you can walk around the lagoon if you want to extend this walk. (No dogs allowed in resort).

Mangroves along the river

Follow the footsteps in the sand to find your way through the mangroves along the river. Low tide is best to get around this section.

“We don’t inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.”
